Sikkim is known for inhabiting various tribes and races of people living together following diverse cultures and traditions. Each community has their languages, dance forms, craft forms and cultures. Nepali is the primary language of the state while Lepcha and Sikkimese are the languages spoken in the northeast part of Sikkim.
Music and folk dances are an integral part of the Sikkimese culture that can be observed on the eve of festivals and religious events. ‘Maruni’ and ‘Tamamg Selo’ are two of the most popular dance forms that are performed by a group of females to the rhythmic music of ‘Damphu’ a popular musical instrument of Sikkim.
